Parents Centres and Bentam
On October 24th, for one week, you will have the chance to bid for a unique rocking chair or castle made by Villa Carton, and illustrated by a selection of people, including media personality and mum Lana Coc-Kroft, artists Shane Hansen and Annie Smits-Sandano, as well as children’s book illustrator and author Gavin Bishop and the What Now! team, who each kindly offered their time to decorate a chair or castle. Proceeds will go to the Parents Centres in Christchurch. The idea is the brainchild of Ben and Tam De Haan who have an import business Bentam Ltd and were eager to help in a creative way following February’s devastating earthquake in Christchurch. Back then, they were expecting their fourth child and wondered how they could help parents in Christchurch who might be dealing with the stresses of a new baby as well as the tragic events in their city.
“We’d just signed up Villa Carton, a fantastic Dutch range of children’s craft toys, and thought why not offer their colouring-in rocking chairs to artists and creative people to add a little flair and produce their own designed versions to auction for the two Parents Centres in Christchurch,” explains Tam.
“We have been blown away by the time and effort each person has put into their throne or castle, they are each a work of art and will make a unique gift or playroom addition,” says Ben.
Parents Centres Chief Executive, Viv Gurrey, has high praise for this initiative. “Having a baby is a life-altering time in any family’s life and we know there have been families in Christchurch who have really been struggling to cope over this past year. This is such an inspiring example of local people doing what they can to help families in need and we thank Ben and Tam for their support for Parents Centres.”
The auction will run from October 24 and is for a sturdy Villa Carton cardboard throne (RRP$ 79.95) that has been beautifully designed by one of the generous people involved - a beautiful and unique christmas gift. Full details of the auction can be found at Sella from Monday 24 October. For more information on Villa Carton see: www.bentam.co.nz
