sella & the IRD
sella.co.nz is a great way for any Kiwi to sell anything to anyone. This can be a great way to earn a little extra to supplement your primary income and help cover the increasing cost of living.
How do you know if you have to pay taxes?
The quickest answer to this is, if you sell on sella.co.nz as a business then, yes, you do have to pay taxes on any income you receive for goods sold.
If you buy goods with the explicit purpose of selling them to make money, either for business or hobby, you MUST pay tax on any funds received for these goods.
What about GST?
You don't need to be GST registered if you are selling privately or as a hobby unless you turn over in excess of $60,000 in a 12 month period.
If you turn over, or expect to turn over $60,000 in 12 months, then you must be GST registered.
